The Reach for Reading programs, Reaching Up and Reaching Higher are tutor-based intervention programs designed to bring the reading skills of at-risk students up to grade level.
Providing one-on-one attention that is not often possible in the classroom, Reach for Reading tutors work with children in bright, comforting reading stations and utilize a variety of visual, auditory and tactile aids. Kids actually like coming to their Reach for Reading sessions, and usually become confident enough in their improved reading skills in the first few weeks to begin participating more in class. |

Reaching Up
During each 30-minute session with the RfR tutor, the child travels through an interesting and exciting lesson plan, including:
Most children who complete the 10-week ReachingUP! program show significant increases in letter recognition, reading vocabulary and awareness of story. Their written vocabulary expands, and their self-confidence soars.
They may read as many of 30 or 40 little books in their ten-week session, something they never thought they could do. As a result, their confidence inspires them to begin to participate more in class, and become more excited about - and involved in - the learning process. When children do not show significant improvement after ten Reach for Reading sessions, it usually means they need more extensive, diagnostic help than RfR programs can provide. |

(Order
Online through Rigby.com) While Reaching Up is designed to help students learn to read, Reaching Higher is designed to help students read to learn. Targeting upper elementary students (3rd-, 4th- and 5th-graders), Reaching Higher focuses on combining ideas, abilities and information to extend the student's knowledge. Utilizing the three basic senses for learning- auditory, tactile and visual, Reaching Higher is a whirlwind of activities that keep the child focused on seeing, comprehending, and retaining knowledge. Reading is still the basis, but rather than the end, it becomes the means. The 30-minute Reaching Higher session includes:
Most of the money, effort and time spent on reading programs is focused on early elementary students, but more and more data is pointing to the need to focus reading instruction at all levels. Recognizing that upper elementary children are farther along in their reading skills than early elementary students, but that they are still at risk and in need of individual help, Reach for Reading created Reaching Higher. And schools all across the country are glad we did! |
