Harcourt Supplemental Publishers

(July 13, 2001)

On July 12, 2001 Reed Elsevier completed the acquisition of the businesses of Harcourt General.  As a supplemental educational publishing company within the Reed Elsevier Group, Rigby Education, based in Barrington, Illinois, now joins Harcourt Education Group as one of two business units dedicated to supplemental publishing.  The other is Steck-Vaughn, located in Austin, Texas.  Rigby President, Steven Korte, has been named President / CEO of Harcourt Supplemental Publishers, and will oversee the operations of both companies, effective immediately.

Established in 1986, Rigby has achieved outstanding growth and prominence since becoming a member of the Reed Elsevier plc Group in 1992.  Its business focus is literacy materials for elementary schools grades K - 5, including resources for early childhood, bilingual, primary and intermediate students.  Rigby also delivers professional development courses and seminars for educational professionals in the area of literacy development.

Steck Vaughn has been in existence for over sixty years and a member of the Harcourt Education Group since 1997.  As a leading company in supplemental materials, Steck Vaughn's products range from grades K - 12, with supplemental and reinforcement materials in the areas of reading, language arts, social studies and special education.  A market leading line of products also serves the adult GED market.  The Steck-Vaughn Berrent division focuses on test preparation, available as print and online resources.  Raintree Steck Vaughn is the library division of the company, which supplies titles to school and public libraries.

Under the newly formed Harcourt Supplemental Publishers, both the Rigby and Steck Vaughn organizations will benefit from increased investment and coordination of resources to better serve school districts across the country.  HSP will report through the Harcourt Education Group, located in Orlando, Florida.  Harcourt Education is headed by Tony Lucki, CEO.  Other companies within Harcourt Education are Harcourt School Publishers, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Harcourt Religion Publishers, Harcourt Canada, and Harcourt Trade Publishers.
